What does Nightstop UK do?

Nightstop UK is the national organisation to which all local Nightstop schemes must affiliate. Nightstop UK ensures that Minimum Standards of Practice and Care are being adhered to in the local schemes. These Standards are there for the benefit of both young people using Nightstop and volunteers who provide the emergency accommodation in their own homes. Nightstop UK also provides support, advice and training to local schemes. In addition we provide support and consultancy to groups interested in setting up a new scheme

How does it work?

Young people are referred via a recognised agency (social services, police, etc)

'Host' volunteers provide the accommodation in their own homes. Young people have a room of their own and are provided with a change of clothes, toiletries, an evening meal and a listening ear (if necessary)

How long can a young person stay?

There is no maximum time limit that a young person can stay with a Nightstop scheme, however Nightstop UK recommends they stay with the same volunteer host for between 1 and 3 nights. They would then be placed with a different host within the same Nightstop scheme. In addition the young person must be actively seeking a longer term solution to their current housing problem.
